Preparing for the Procedure
To prepare for a successful procedure, please follow these instructions carefully. Your cooperation is essential for a thorough examination, as any food or water in the stomach can interfere with the doctor’s ability to assess for ulcers.
- Fasting: Fast your horse for at least 16 hours before the procedure. For a 9 AM appointment, this means no food after 5 PM the previous evening.
- Remove Hay and Bedding: Clear all food, hay, and bedding from the stall. Use a anti-grazing muzzle if your horse may try to eat bedding or other materials.
- Water Removal: Remove water at least 4 hours before the appointment. For a 9 AM procedure, remove water by 5 AM (or as early as 3 AM on cooler nights).
What to Expect During the Procedure
- Sedation: Your horse will be sedated for their comfort and to ensure the procedure is safe.
- Procedure Duration: The procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes, though the appointment may last longer for preparation and recovery.
- Visualization: The veterinarian will guide a camera into the stomach to inspect for ulcers or other abnormalities.
- Results: Findings will be discussed with you, and a treatment plan will be recommended if necessary.
