Gastroscopy

Poor performance, colic and weight loss can be caused by a variety of conditions. Gastroscopy provides a definitive diagnosis, confirming the presence of ulcers and differentiating them from other potential GI issues. It's an essential step to avoid unnecessary treatments and will ultimately save you money.

Preparing for the Procedure

To prepare for a successful procedure, please follow these instructions carefully. Your cooperation is essential for a thorough examination, as any food or water in the stomach can interfere with the doctor’s ability to assess for ulcers.
  • Fasting: Fast your horse for at least 16 hours before the procedure. For a 9 a.m. appointment, this means no food after 5 p.m. the previous evening.
  • Remove Hay and Bedding: Clear all food, hay, and bedding from the stall. Use a anti-grazing muzzle if your horse may try to eat bedding or other materials.
  • Water Removal: Remove water at least 4 hours before the appointment. For a 9 a.m. procedure, remove water by 5 a.m. (or as early as 3 a.m. on cooler nights).
  • Optional Muzzle: If you need a grazing muzzle, we can provide one for a $35 deposit, with a $20 refund upon return.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Sedation: Your horse will be sedated for their comfort and to ensure the procedure is safe.
  • Procedure Duration: The procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes, though the appointment may last longer for preparation and recovery.
  • Visualization: The veterinarian will guide a camera into the stomach to inspect for ulcers or other abnormalities.
  • Results: Findings will be discussed with you, and a treatment plan will be recommended if necessary.
